Established in 1992, TearDrop Putter Corporation, was founded by Fred Hochman in South Carolina. Seeking to be innovative in the design of the putter, TearDrop putters featured a rolled face, which was unique as every other putter was strictly flat faced. The reason behind the rolled face was to prevent the golf ball from bouncing and skidding when struck. These putters also produced a smoother roll through this technology and an increased accuracy. Looking to expand, TearDrop Putter Corporation changed their name to TearDrop Golf Company in 1996 and moved into the wedge and driver industries.
TearDrop’s top lines, which include the TD718 driver, 502 Tour black chrome wedge, and Roll Face classic and TD WX3 I putters were driving forces behind TearDrops early success. TearDrop was not only successful through these clubs but also through their purchase of Tommy Armour Golf Company, RAM Golf Corporation, and Pro Golf Promotions, LLC in 1997.
