The Callaway XR 16 fairway woods were designed with middle and higher handicap players in mind, and they will see the biggest gains with the switch to this club. The innovative features Callaway introduced with this line of woods primarily focus on improving the height and distance of mis-hit shots, which will benefit the lesser player more than the better player. Players looking to shape their fairway woods and increase workability should look to Callaway’s XR 16 Pro fairway woods. But any middle or upper handicapper looking for more forgiveness and ball speed should look no further than this XR 16 fairway wood.
The Tech Story
Callaway’s primary goals with the XR 16 fairway woods were to increase forgiveness and speed. To tackle this, the company slightly increased the head shape of the club which helped lower the center of gravity and increase COR. The crowns of these fairway woods are also lighter than previous fairway woods, which allowed Callaway to shift the excess weight around the clubhead to maximize forgiveness and increase the amount of ball speed the club could generate. Finally, Callaway’s engineers took the company’s Hyper Speed Face Cup technology and made it hotter and thinner, which has led to a larger sweet spot and an increase in speed.
