Titleist TS Drivers: An Infusion Of Speed

The task given to Titleist engineers was simple: to make the new TS drivers the fastest Titleist had ever made. It took plenty of work and several design strategies were explored, but in the end, for the team who worked on the Titleist Speed Project, it was a mission accomplished. In fact, the TS2 and TS3 that were first released were so well-received that Titleist decided to develop TS1 and TS4 models to meet the needs of even more golfers. And more importantly for Titleist, the TS driver franchise catapulted the company back into being a market leader in the driver category, a position it had admittedly surrendered for a few years. Keying the newfound speed that every TS model delivers is a thinner titanium clubface that utilizes a variable face thickness pattern to improve ball speed protection on off-center strikes. TS drivers also feature the thinnest crowns that Titleist has ever used, which create low, deep centers of gravity that promote high MOI, effortless launch, and low spin. And finally, new aerodynamic shaping helps players generate more clubhead speed to further enjoy distance gains. In summary, these are drivers that flatout perform. Now all you have to do is decide which of the four models is best for your game, and we’re here to help you make the right choice.

Titleist TS Driver Selection FAQ

Q: What are the different TS driver options that are available?
A: There are four TS drivers: the TS1, TS2, TS3, and TS4. Each model was designed to offer unique performance benefits to suit the needs of different types of players. As a brief overview, TS1 was created for players with more moderate swing speeds, TS2 excels in terms of forgiveness and will suit a wide array of golfers, TS3 is the most customizable of the four options, and TS4 will work best for faster swingers and better players.

Q: How should I approach choosing the right head design?
A: That process starts with determining what you are looking for from your driver on the golf course. Do you need as much forgiveness as possible? Do you need to lower your spin rate? Do you struggle to generate swing speed? Once you identify your needs, the decision should become fairly obvious, but you can always contact a 2nd Swing certified fitter at 612-216-4152 for more assistance if this page doesn’t provide a clear answer.

Q: Is there one of the four models that will pretty much work for anyone?
A: Assuming that a player has the correct loft and shaft for their game and their swing, the answer is yes and the TS2 is that model. As an example, the TS2 is widely played on worldwide professional tours but it is also extremely popular with mid- and high-handicap players thanks to the combination of ball speed, high launch, and forgiveness that it offers.

Q: I want maximum forgiveness but how do I know if TS1 or TS2 is right for my game?
A: The answer to this question really comes down to how far you hit the golf ball. If you struggle to hit a driver 200 yards, the TS1 is the right choice for your game, as it was designed to help players who struggle to generate speed add more yards off the tee. Conversely, if you have the swing speed to create distance but lose some of that potential distance as a result of poor contact, the TS2 will be the better option.

Q: As a lower-handicap player, should I go with TS3 or TS4?
A: TS3 and TS4 are both great options for low-handicap players. Of the two, the TS4 features a smaller profile at 430cc, which will make it more workable but also less forgiving. It will also produce less spin with a CG position that has been pushed forward. The TS4 is really for an elite ball-striker, so if you have any doubts about whether or not you fall into that category, erring on the side of caution with the TS3, which is still a low-spin, workable driver, is the best choice.

Q: Do I have to be a low-handicap golfer to play the TS3?
A: No. While TS3 features a more compact, tour-inspired profile than TS2, it still offers high MOI. It also provides the most customization of any of the TS models, so mid-handicappers who want to optimize performance through personalization will have that option with TS3. Worth noting, however, is that for most players, TS3 should launch and spin slightly lower than TS2, so it’s important to keep that in mind when choosing the loft of your driver.

Q: Does the loft I pick really matter and if so what loft should I choose?
A: The correct loft is crucial when it comes to optimizing driver performance. More specifically, the correct loft for your swing characteristics ensures that you can maximize carry and total distance. Typically, players with more swing speed and those who hit up on the ball at impact can play a driver with less loft, while those with less clubhead speed and players who hit down on the ball with a driver or have a more neutral angle of attack need more loft.

Q: If I can’t get fit in-person, how do I go about picking a shaft that will work for me?
A: In picking the right shaft, you want to get the flex and weight correct. Players with more speed will typically play stiffer, heavier shafts, while those with less speed will need lighter, more flexible shafts. That said, someone with a longer, smoother swing can also play and benefit from a lighter, more flexible shaft, while players with shorter swings and quicker transitions will often fare better with heavier, stiffer shafts. If you need more help in making the right shaft choice for your game, call 612-216-4152 to speak with a 2nd Swing certified fitter.

Q: How does the Titleist adjustable hosel work and how can it benefit me?
A: Titleist has utilized its SureFit hosel for several years with incredible popularity. The SureFit hosel enables golfers to adjust loft and lie independently, providing them with 16 unique settings to fine tune performance. Golfers can increase loft by 1.5 degrees or decrease loft by .75 degrees, as well as utilize upright or flat lie angle settings to improve centeredness of contact or create either a right-to-left or left-to-right ball flight. That said, the SureFit hosel should be the final piece of the fitting equation for your TS driver after selecting the driver head, loft, and shaft.

Q: Why does picking the correct loft matter if there’s an adjustable hosel to use?
A: It’s important to understand that when you make loft changes using the SureFit hosel, or any adjustable hosel for that matter, you’re also changing the driver’s face angle. More specifically, when adding loft you’re closing the clubface and when reducing loft you’re opening the face, both of which will influence the shots you hit, and there could be adverse effects. It’s for that reason that the SureFit adjustable hosel should be used to fine tune performance as the last step in self-fitting or being professionally fit.

A Closer Look At The Four TS Driver Heads

TS1: Titleist recommends the lightweight TS1 driver for golfers who struggle to achieve drives of 200 yards and longer. The TS1 features a highly forgiving 460cc clubhead and an aerodynamic shape, which promote clubhead and ball speed to help moderate swing speed golfers generate more distance. The TS1 was also designed to be paired with a lightweight shaft and grip to play at an overall weight of just 275 grams. It comes at a stock length of 45.75 inches, the longest of the TS drivers, and is available in lofts of 9.5, 10.5, and 12.5 degrees, but the 9.5-degree and 12.5-degree models are available in right-hand only.

TS2: The TS2 is a driver that can be played by almost any golfer. It’s fast and forgiving, and it provides a high-launch, lower-spinning profile that equates to exceptional distance. The TS2 features an expanded 460cc footprint and modern shape, and advanced aerodynamics have been utilized to reduce drag and help golfers swing the club faster. The TS2 utilizes fixed weight low and deep in the clubhead to provide stability at impact and optimal launch conditions. It is available in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5, and 11.5 degrees, the most options of any of the TS models, and each loft is available in right- and left-hand.

TS3: Unique to the TS3 is Titleist’s SureFit CG, a weight that can be positioned in the head to create optimal results. The TS3, like the TS2, is 460cc, but it offers a more compact footprint and a tour-inspired pear shape that allows players to work the ball more easily. For most golfers, the TS3 will also create a flatter trajectory and slightly lower spin rates than the TS2, making it a popular option with better players. But it also offers ample forgiveness for average players who prefer the shape or want the added customization. TS3 drivers are available in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, and 10.5 degrees for both right- and left-handers.

TS4: Unless you find the middle of the clubface on a regular basis and generate significant clubhead speed, the TS4 isn’t the driver for you. That said, if you strike it solidly and need a driver that promotes maximum workability and extremely low spin, the latter of which is made possible by a CG position pushed closer to the face, the TS4 is one of the best drivers on the market. Also noteworthy is that the TS4 features a 430cc profile, which is quite small by today’s standards. TS4 drivers are available in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, and 10.5 degrees, but only the 9.5 is offered as a left-handed option.
