Matthieu Pavon birdied the 72nd hole to pick up his first career PGA Tour win at the Farmers Insurance Open. Not only did Pavon pick up a victory at one of the PGA Tour's marquee courses in Torrey PInes, he also became the first Frenchman to win on Tour in 117 years.

Pavon is a PING staffer and his winning bag was made completely of PING clubs.

Pavon employs a PING G430 Max at 9 Degrees for his driver. For the entirety of the tournament, Pavon ranked 36th in Strokes Gained off the Tee, while finishing in a tie for 16th in driving accuracy, and 38th in distance. The G430 Max is the more forgiving option of the original G430 models, not counting the G430 Max 10K, and while maybe it sacrifices some distance compared to the LST model, it served Pavon well, helping him finish in the upper echelon in driving accuracy. That accuracy played a key part in his win, as it set him up to use the strength of his game, his approach shots.

While Pavon went with the more forgiving option with his driver, in his lone fairway wood, he elected a lower spinning option in the PING G430 LST. In addition to its lower spin, the LST model also has lower launch than other G430 models due to its more forward center of gravity. It's tailored for players with faster swing speeds and helps achieve more distance.

Hybrid: PING G430

With no 5-wood or 7-wood in his bag, Pavon opted to use a PING G430 hybrid at 19 degrees this weekend. Typically you'll see players use a hybrid in place of an iron as well, but Pavon still carried a 3-iron through pitching wedge in his bag. The G430 hybrid gave him a higher launching option with more stopping power than a traditional 3-iron, and with him not being the longest of players, it certainly gives him more flexibility in the kind of shots he wants to hit.

Irons: PING i230 (3-PW)

While Pavon may not be the longest player on Tour, and doesn't overpower courses, he makes the most of his approach game. He finished 3rd in Strokes Gained Approach to Green, and tied for 24th in Greens in Regulation, having 51 looks at birdie or better out of 72 holes. While combo sets are becoming more popular, Pavon plays a more traditional setup with his PING i230's, having the 3-iron through the pitching wedge in his bag.

Wedges: PING s159 (52, 58 Degrees)

Along with his approach game, Pavon's scrambling game was one of the catalysts to his win. He converted 15 of his 21 opportunites to get up-and-down. Helping Pavon around the green is PING's newest wedge, the s159 series.

Pavon uses the PING Cadence TR Tomcat putter, and it was the star of the show during his victory. He finished 5th in Strokes Gained Putting, tied for 8th in total putts, and tied for 12th in putts per GIR. He was lethal with the flatstick and never was that more present than in the final round, and more specifically the final hole. After hittting a dazzling 3rd shot into the par 5 18th, Pavon had about 8 feet left for birdie. After Nicolai Hojgaard had birdied to pull even with Pavon, Matthieu needed to make his putt to secure the victory, and he did just that, locking up his first career PGA Tour win.
