G Le 2 creating better performance for female golfers

July 11, 2019

When PING introduced its G Le line in the spring of 2017, the goal was fairly simple, that being to provide golf clubs to help women of all ability levels play better golf.

The development process began with the understanding that when it comes to golf equipment women have different needs than men, and each G Le product was specifically engineered for female golfers and their swing tendencies, as well as to deliver the performance attributes that they value most.

That said, there were no sacrifices made in terms of the technological advances implemented into the design of each G Le club, and only premium materials were used in their construction.

G Le proved to be an incredible success, so it’s no surprise that PING is back with the next generation of the franchise, G Le2. And company engineers have pushed the envelope even further this time around to not only improve performance through innovation but also provide female golfers with even more fitting options.

“G Le2 represents our continued commitment to providing women golfers of every skill level with premium, high-performance equipment optimized to their swing speeds,” said Stacey Pauwels, a PING Executive Vice President who oversees the brand’s women’s initiatives.

Among the most notable changes to G Le2 when compared with G Le is that PING engineers worked tirelessly to find ways to save weight in each of the products to make them lighter.

That process, however, is more challenging than one might expect. Each component of the club -- head, shaft, and grip -- has to work in unison to provide balance during the swing, so getting the formula just right was crucial in terms of fulfilling the ultimate goals of helping players generate more speed and square the clubface more easily at impact.

“To achieve one of our goals of improving the feel of the club throughout the swing, we focused on making the clubs lighter,” said Pauwels, the granddaughter of PING founders Karsten and Louise Solheim. “We integrated our extensive knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes with our proven design technologies to deliver measurable improvements throughout the set.”

Also important to note about the G Le2 lineup is that each club is custom built to deliver optimal performance for the player.

And with a new adjustable hosel that offers more settings now available in both the driver and fairway woods, PING can unlock improved performance from those clubs for golfers who have been properly fit.

Additionally, expanded fairway, hybrid, and iron options make it easier for players to achieve proper yardage gapping through the bag, and the new G Le2 putters feature the adjustable shaft technology that PING introduced in Sigma 2 to ensure that golfers have the correct length putter, which is imperative when it comes to success on the greens.

“Having equipment that is custom fitted to their games allows women to see improvement from every club in their bag,” said Pauwels. “The G Le2 family really emphasizes that need through loft, lie, and length adjustability along with the shaft weight, flex, and grip offerings. Once we know those specifications, finding the best combination of fairway woods, hybrids, irons, and wedges during a fitting is the next step in the process.”

In terms of the specific clubs available in the G Le2 line, there is a driver that comes at a standard loft of 11.5 degrees that players can adjust to lofts ranging from 10 to 13 degrees.

The driver also features a more aerodynamic head shape to promote maximum swing speed, and a thin, forged T9S+ clubface optimizes flex for women’s swing speeds to promote faster ball speeds and naturally higher launch conditions.

There are also four fairway wood options (3-, 5-, 7-, and 9-wood), as well as four hybrid choices (4H, 5H, 6H, and 7H) that range in loft from 22 to 34 degrees.

The G Le2 fairway woods feature a maraging C300 clubface, which is lightweight and strong to produce ball speed increases, while the hybrids feature a 455 Carpenter Steel clubface that provides the same speed advantage. The fairways and hybrids also have a low, deep CG position that creates higher MOI, which will deliver improved results on off-center strikes.

The G Le2 irons, meanwhile, are offered from 6-PW and also in utility (UW) and sand (SW) wedges. The irons feature PING’s highly successful COR-Eye Technology, which provides face flexing mechanics that create high launch and increased ball speeds.

G Le2 irons also have tungsten weighting in the toe to provide 10 percent higher MOI when compared to the G Le irons, and a new cavity badge has improved sound and feel at impact.

And finally, three different putter options are available to suit any player’s stroke type or aesthetic preferences, and as mentioned previously each features adjustable shaft technology to accommodate playing lengths between 31 and 35 inches.

More specifically in terms of the head shapes, the Anser is PING’s iconic blade design, the Shea is a mid-mallet option, and the Echo would best be described as a modern mallet.

All said, G Le2’s wide range of club options and improved fitting capabilities give female golfers the chance to have a full bag setup that can help them play better and have more fun on the course, which was PING’s ultimate goal.

“Because we custom build every club, we want women to know we’ll make them a set that best fits their game,” Pauwels said. “The key is determining the ideal set makeup that provides proper distance gaps between each club. Once we have their fitting information, we can custom build the clubs to their precise specifications for maximum performance.”
