Who’s It For

Taylormade’s P790 Black irons will provide golfers with the same exceptional distance, ample forgiveness, clean look, and forged feel as the original P790 irons but with a new all-black PVD finish. Also like the original chrome P790, the P790 Black irons will be a great fit for a wide array of players. They will work especially well for lower-handicappers who need added distance and/or help with their launch conditions, and they’ll work equally well for a mid-handicap golfer who’s improving and ready to move into a players iron.

The Tech Story

The technology in the P790 is arguably more extensive than what’s been seen in any players iron that TaylorMade has ever created. Most notably, the clubhead is a forged, hollow construction that is filled with what TaylorMade calls SpeedFoam, a new material that is injected into each head as a liquid and upon contact with the air expands to fill the cavity. The SpeedFoam serves multiple purposes in the design. First, along with the forged construction of the clubhead, it helps create incredibly soft feel at impact. Second, its presence enables a clubface that is just 1.75 millimeters thick, which leads to impressive distance numbers thanks to the faster ball speeds being generated. Additionally, a new wrapped-face construction coupled with a Speed Pocket allows the clubface to flex more at impact, promoting higher launch and improved consistency regardless of strike. Tungsten weighting is also injected into each clubhead to optimize CG position, inertia, and flight conditions through the set. And finally, the new P790 Black PVD finish is a premium, high-gloss black that pairs exceptionally well with a black Dynamic Gold 105 shaft to provide a sleek, compact look at address.
