Davis Thompson cruised to his first PGA Tour victory at the John Deere Classic thanks to some impressive golf over the weekend. The 25-year-old shot rounds of 62 on Saturday and 64 on Sunday to cruise to a four-stroke win, while setting the tournament scoring record at -28! 

Thompson’s winning bag features a nice mix of PING and Titleist clubs along with an older Odyssey putter.

Driver: Titleist TSR3

Shaft: Mitsubishi Diamana DF 70 TX

Starting off Thompson’s bag is a Titleist TSR3 driver. He plays it with a 9-degree head and a Mitsubishi Diamana DF 70 TX shaft in it. Thompson was plenty long with the club, averaging 307.7 yards off the tee, which was 23rd best in the field. He was also decently accurate, hitting 40 of 56 fairways, which was tied for 25th best. That combination helped Thompson gain 3.205 strokes on the field off the tee, which was 11th best for the tournament.

Fairway Woods: Ping G430 Max (3-Wood, 7-Wood)

Shafts: Mitsubishi Tensei 1K White 80 TX (3-Wood), Mitsubishi Diamana D+  80 TX (7-Wood)

Moving to the fairway wood section of the bag, Thompson games a PING G430 Max for both his 3-Wood and 7-Wood. The Max provides maximum forgiveness and high launch, giving players a little more stopping power into greens, while providing plenty of ball speed even off of mishits. Seeing a 3-Wood is pretty common in a Tour players bag, but Thompson also plays a 7-Wood, which is starting to become a growing trend as it provides golfers with a great club to attack holes from a distance with due to its higher ball flight.

Irons: Ping i210 (4), Titleist 620 MB (5-9)

Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid Tour Issue X100

For Thompson’s irons, he pairs a PING i210 4 iron with some Titleist 620 MB’s, and plays the same shaft in all of them. The i210 was released in 2018, and while the i230 has replaced it in PING’s lineup, Thompson still plays it for his 4-iron, giving him a players cavity for his long iron, which provides some higher launch and more forgiveness than the Titleist 620 MB’s he plays for the rest of his irons. The combination worked quite well this past weekend. Thompson tied for 7th in Greens In Regulation hit at nearly an 82 percent hit rate. Overall, he gained 2.722 strokes on the field on his approach, was 29th best for the tournament.

Wedges: Titleist Vokey Design SM10 (46.10F, 50.08F), Titleist Vokey Design WedgeWorks (54.08M, 60.04T)

Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 (46), True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 (50-60)

Thompson plays 4 Vokey wedges,  including a 46 degree wedge in place of a traditional pitching wedge. While these wedges played their part in his approach performance, they shined brightest around the green. Of the 13 greens Thompson missed in regulation, he got up-and-down on 11 of those opportunities, including going a perfect 5 for 5 from the sand. That performance around the green led him to a 4th place finish in Strokes Gained Around the Green, gaining 5.336 strokes on the field.

Putter: Odyssey White Hot OG #7

If you’re getting up-and-down as many times as Thompson did at the John Deere Classic, odds are your putter was rolling it well in addition to some great wedge play, and that rang true for Davis Thompson. He led the tournament in putts per GIR, averaging 1.54 putts for every time he found the green with a look at birdie or better. He was also making putts from all over the green, including a 45-foot birdie on the opening hole of his 1st round that settled any nerves. For the tournament, he made 101 feet of putts, which was 3rd best in the field. That performance helped him gain 7.432 strokes on the field from the putting surface, which was 5th best overall.
